Can I Have It?      Words and Music by Randy Peterson

Look what came in the mail today. A catalog full of toys!

It's got everything you ever could want for every girl and boy!

I was sittin' with Mom, turning the pages. Suddenly I stopped...

"There's that toy from on TV that all my friends have got!"

And I said, "Can I, can I, can I, can I have it?

Can I, can I, can I, please Mom?

'Cause if I can, I can, I can, I can have it,

I'd be good the whole day long."

Mom said, "Sorry, but not today. Maybe when your birthday comes.

But your Dad's just leaving for the hardware store. Ride along!  I'm sure you'll have fun."

Well, right in the window of the hardware store stood a bike, shiny and new.

It had silver stars on the handle bars. It was painted red, white and blue!

And I said, "Can I, can I, can I, can I have it?

Can I, can I, can I, please Dad?

'Cause if I can, I can, I can, I can have it,

I would never ever, ever be bad."

Dad said, "Son, you'll have to wait 'till you're older than you are."

And on the way back home Dad stopped to look at a shiny brand new car.

Dad's eyes grew wide as he sat inside and he touched the leather and the chrome.

And this is what my Daddy said to Mom when we got home...

He said, "Can I, can I, can I, can I have it?

Can I, can I, can I, please dear?

'Cause if I can, I can, I can, I can have it,

I would do the dishes for a year!"

We all want what we don't have and there's new things every year.

There's one thing I guarantee you're always, always, always gonna hear...

Oh, Can I, can I, can I, can I have it?

Can I, can I make it mine?

'Cause if I can, I can, I can, I can have it,

I'd be happy 'till   ...next time.
