Don't Squash That Bug Words and Music by Randy Peterson No one hates bugs as much as Tasha. She's scared of every beetle, wasp and gnat. When a fly gives her a buzz, like a fly often does, she runs away like a scaredy cat! Her little brother, just by chance, is SO different. He's just LOVES bugs. He studies them a lot. He calls them all by name, to him it's like a game, to see how many kinds he can spot. Now one day, Tasha was reading in the yard, sittin' with her back against a tree. A tickle made her pause, she looked down and saw a fuzzy caterpillar crawling on her knee. And she said, "Get it, get it, get it, get it off of me! Can't you, can't you, can't you, can't you, can't you see? Did you, did you, did you ever see something so ICKY? Into the grass the caterpillar flew. Tasha took careful aim with her shoe. Her little brother saw what she was going to do... and he said, "WAIT! Don't squash that bug! That's not just any bug! Someday that caterpillar will be a butterfly." Oh he said, "WAIT! Don't squash that bug! That's not just any bug! Just let him go so he can fly off in the sky." One weekend every summer, on a camping trip our family went. And while her brother spent his time hunting bugs of every kind, Tasha mostly sat inside the tent. One night we were all around a campfire. Tasha had a funny feeling on her arm. There was a little beetle walkin'. She had no time for talkin'! Tasha knew that little beetle meant her harm! And she said, "Get it, get it, get it, get it off of me! Can't you, can't you, can't you, can't you, can't you see? Did you, did you, did you ever see something so ICKY? She said, "Please Dad, won't you give it a slap! Quick! Use your hand or your baseball cap! She said to her brother, "What are YOU looking at?" and he said, "WAIT! Don't squash that bug! That's not just any bug! If you take him in the dark, you'll see that that's a firefly." Oh he said, "WAIT! Don't squash that bug! That's not just any bug! Just look across the meadow, there's HUNDREDS of them in the sky."
Now Tasha has a very best friend, and her friend's a lot like Tasha in many ways. When they are both at home, they're always on the phone, talkin' 'bout the things they're gonna do Saturday. Now one day Tasha and her very best friend were sittin' by each other on the couch. They were quite surprised when right before their eyes flew a BEE that somehow go into the house! They both ran in circles yelling! They were running 'round like they had twinkle toes! The bee circled 'round and with a buzzing sound, he landed on Tasha's very best friend's nose! Her friend said, Get it, get it, get it, get it off of me! Can't you, can't you, can't you, can't you, can't you see? Did you, did you, did you ever see something so ICKY? Tasha's very best friend knocked that bee to the floor. Tasha thought about it a little bit more. She thought of all the things her brother said before... and she said, "WAIT! Don't squash that bug! That's not just any bug! I think that's what my brother calls a honey bee." Oh she said, "WAIT! Don't squash that bug! That's not just any bug! My brother says they help the flowers and the trees." She said, "I never ever thought that I'd be saying this, but there's a reason every single bug exists. Let's take him outside so he can fly away. Away." |
